Artificial Grass Cost in Wollongong (2026 Price Guide)

Most turf pages in the Illawarra want your phone number before they show you a dollar figure. This one runs the other way. Below are the published Australian tier ranges, an estimator you can use without giving us anything, and an honest account of the local variable that moves an Illawarra quote more than the grass ever will: what is under it.

Supply and installed rates by quality tier

Tier Supply only ($/m²) Supplied & installed ($/m²) Typical lifespan
Budget $25–40 $75–95 5–8 years
Mid $40–60 $95–130 10–15 years
Premium $60–100+ $130–160+ 15–20+ years

Compiled from published 2025-26 Australian supplier and industry pricing (Premier Grass, EasyTurf, All Seasons and others). National ranges, indicative only. Most Australian households land in the $90-130 per square metre installed band for a standard residential lawn.

The gap between supply-only and installed, and what fills it

Budget turf is about $25-40 per square metre as a product. Laid, the same tier is about $75-95. That difference is not margin on the grass. Published industry figures split a residential job roughly 40 per cent materials, 30 per cent base preparation and 30 per cent labour, so more than half of what you pay buys excavation, road base, screenings, compaction, edging, infill and hours.

Two things follow. Upgrading the product tier costs less in the total than the supply prices suggest, because you are only inflating the 40 per cent, and the lifespan difference between tiers is large: 5-8 years at budget, 10-15 mid, 15-20 plus at premium, with CHOICE noting a well-maintained premium lawn can reach 25 years. Going the other way, a quote that undercuts the field by a third has almost certainly economised in the 30 per cent of the job that is buried, and buried is exactly where Illawarra ground punishes shortcuts.

The four Illawarra conditions that move a number

1. Reactive clay on the footslopes

The Gwynneville soil landscape unit runs under 58.2 per cent of Corrimal, 56.6 per cent of Fairy Meadow and 51.5 per cent of Balgownie. Its report's limitations line reads "Reactive subsoils and impermeable, low wet bearing strength clay subsoils", and its gw3 soil is rated "Low permeability". Reactive means the clay changes volume as its moisture changes, and low wet bearing strength means it gets soft when wet. Neither is a reason not to lay turf. Both are reasons the base has to be built rather than raked out, and building it costs money.

2. Impeded drainage, stated by the government

The Berkeley unit, 20.6 per cent of Figtree and 5.9 per cent of Unanderra, lists "reactive subsoils. Locally impeded drainage" among its limitations and says "Highly reactive soils" in its Surface Movement Potential section. That is the most reactive unit mapped anywhere in the Illawarra. A yard on it needs a real answer to where water goes, and a drainage line is a line item.

3. Artificial fill

Unanderra is 47.3 per cent Disturbed Terrain, Shellharbour 14.8 per cent, Figtree 9.9 per cent. The unit report describes ground "disturbed by human activity to a depth of at least 100 cm", flags "soil impermeability leading to poor drainage", and recommends "a survey at a suitable scale as well as geotechnical analysis" because of the variability of materials. Fill is the single biggest source of quote variance in this market, because nobody knows what the excavator will find.

4. Water tables under permeable topsoil

Horsley is essentially one unit, Fairy Meadow alluvium, at 92.6 per cent plus a further 7.3 per cent of the same unit mapped on the Kiama sheet. Its limitations read "flood hazard, Low wet bearing strength, highly permeable soils, high seasonal watertables", and the Kiama sheet's version adds that "High watertables limit soil volumes available for root penetration". Free-draining above, wet below. That is a different design problem from clay and it is priced differently.

Each of these is unpacked properly in the guide to what reactive clay and impeded drainage do to a turf base.

Ten years of synthetic against ten years of grass

The comparison is usually presented too neatly, so here are both framings without blending them. Australian supplier analysis puts around 50 square metres of natural lawn at roughly $1,500 to establish, with mowing, water and periodic re-turfing over a decade reaching about $20,000. The same area in artificial turf is typically $3,000-$5,000 installed with near-zero running cost. Against that, independent reviewer CHOICE points out the artificial up-front install is commonly around double the natural establishment cost, and that artificial turf carries a larger lifecycle carbon footprint and up to 60 per cent higher runoff than natural grass.

The Illawarra wrinkle is watering rules. Sydney Water's Water Wise Guidelines let you water a lawn before 10am or after 4pm, with drip and smart systems permitted between 10am and 4pm, and give newly laid natural turf 28 days of unrestricted watering from installation. That 28 days is the most generous establishment window of the three NSW markets we cover. It is also temporary and conditional on following the supplier's care instructions, after which the ordinary window resumes for the rest of the lawn's life.

Where the price lands by job type

Published Australian per-application ranges, useful for setting expectations before a measure:

  • Residential lawn: about $85-140 per square metre installed.
  • Pet-grade: about $100-145, reflecting the permeable backing and odour-control infill. See pet turf and drainage on Illawarra clay.
  • Balcony or rooftop: about $90-150, because membrane protection and drainage cells enter the scope.
  • Commercial: about $75-110, where area brings the rate down.
  • Sports surfaces: about $110-180, with pile and infill set by the code being played.

Infill is a real line rather than a rounding error: standard silica or kiln-dried sand at roughly 10-15 kilograms per square metre, power-broomed in after the lay so the fibres stand up. Pet installs usually add zeolite for ammonia odour, priced separately. Cost questions, answered straight

What does artificial grass cost per square metre in Wollongong?

Supplied and installed, published Australian pricing puts budget product at roughly $75-95 per square metre, mid range at $95-130, and premium at $130-160 and above. Supply only, the same tiers are about $25-40, $40-60 and $60-100 plus. Those are national supplier and industry figures rather than Illawarra quotes, and on clay or fill ground the base preparation component can push a real quote outside them in either direction.

Why did two neighbours in the same street get very different numbers?

Usually excavation and disposal. Two blocks 40 metres apart in Bulli can sit on different mapped soil units, because Bulli runs from alluvial flats through footslope clay to escarpment talus. Add a steep driveway, a narrow side gate that turns spoil removal into a wheelbarrow relay, or a fill site where the crew hits rubble at 200mm, and the labour and tipping lines move a long way while the grass line does not move at all.

Is a small courtyard cheaper per square metre than a full yard?

No, dearer. Mobilising a crew, hiring compaction plant, minimum material orders and setting out are largely fixed, so spreading them over 18 square metres lifts the effective rate. The upside is that the absolute dollars of moving up a tier are small on a courtyard, so premium product is often the sensible choice there even when it would not be across 120 square metres.

Does the quote include getting rid of my existing lawn?

It should, but make it explicit. A proper install excavates roughly 75mm of turf, roots and topsoil, or about 100mm where a vehicle will drive on it, and that material has to leave the site. Ask whether tipping fees are inside the number or added later, because on a fill site the spoil can include things the crew did not expect.

Is there a rebate or subsidy that reduces the price?

No. There is no artificial turf rebate anywhere in Australia. Sydney Water's WaterFix is a paid plumbing service covering indoor fixtures such as taps, showerheads and toilets, and its pension rebate is a concession on your bill. Neither applies to landscaping, and any site suggesting otherwise is inventing it.

How should I compare two quotes that are $2,000 apart?

Line by line on the invisible items. Excavation depth in millimetres, base material and number of compaction passes, the drainage detail and where water exits, edge restraint type and fixing spacing, infill in kilograms per square metre, and the turf specified by pile height, backing type and warranty term rather than by a product name. Roughly 40 per cent of a job is materials, 30 per cent base preparation and 30 per cent labour, so a large gap almost always sits in the 60 per cent you will never see again once the grass is down.
